Former Minister of Information, Nana Akomea has called for massive support for Ghanaian theatre, and the creative industry as a whole, noting that it holds the potential of giving Ghana good mileage on the international stage. Nana Akomea, who is also a former Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), point out that while Ghana has been applauded for being a peaceful and democratic country, theatre is another tool the country could use to further boost its image. Speaking in an interview with Myjoyonline.com after the exclusive viewing of James Ebo Whyte's play "The Last Flight" Thursday night at the National Theatre, he underscored the importance of theatre to a country's development. "This another way of getting mileage. This kind of productions if we take them abroad shows that the country is peaceful, the country is moving forward. It maybe small but it has great impact," he said. Nana Akomea further noted that while there is a Ministry for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts that seeks the welfare of theatre and the creative arts, he will "like to see a bigger focus in terms of government support for the arts and culture. Too many Chinese imports, too many foreign imports let's look at improving our own." Touching on "The Last Flight", the former Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South disclosed that this is second production of James Ebo Whyte he had watched. According to him, he "had a certain expectation and my expectation has been totally meet. Great production, tight choreography, it couldn't have been better." He said productions by Roverman Productions, owned by James Ebo Whyte, "deserves the support of all of us, this is an authentic African play, it is not an adaptation of anything. This is homegrown stuff, Mr. Ebo Whyte was calling for support, yes we should support this, a lot of the time we like to support adaptations of foreign productions." He added that, "this is a real African play, a real Ghanaian play, it is unique we should support it, promote it so that it can be done in such a way that it can be taken to other African countries." "The Last Flight" The play is another masterpiece by renowned playwright, Jame Ebo Whyte. "The Last Flight", set at the departure hall of an airport, captures how interconnected human beings are. It holds a key lesson that what one does will, all shall always come back to haunt him or her - the Law of Karma. A packed National Theatre got an overdose of pure unadulterated entertainment during the exclusive showing Thursday night. Patrons were awashed with exciting comedy laced with education. Every character was apt for the play and it was exciting to see how James Ebo Whyte and his Roverman Productions team managed to execute the play 'at' just one location - the airport. "The Last Flight" highlights the essence of being good to one another for an individual does not know when he or she will need the help of the other. The play will run at the National Theatre on November 30 and December 1, 2013, 4pm and 8pm each day.
